A teenager is behind bars after a woman was stabbed multiple times and two dogs were shot and killed in what Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez is calling an intimate partner violence investigation.
Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded Tuesday night to a disturbance in the 300 block of Highlands Cross Drive, near the North Freeway and FM-1960.
Upon arrival, deputies found a significant amount of blood leading into an apartment. They forced entry and discovered two dogs with apparent gunshot wounds and a butcher knife inside.
Around the same time, deputies learned that a woman had arrived at a nearby hospital with multiple stab wounds. Investigators connected the two scenes and identified her former boyfriend as the alleged attacker.
While deputies were still at the hospital, the suspect arrived and was detained.
Johan Caballero, 18, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, family violence, violation of a protective order and animal cruelty. He was booked into the Harris County Jail.
Sheriff Gonzalez noted the disturbing intersection of domestic violence and animal cruelty.
“The intersection of domestic violence and animal cruelty is particularly troubling, as violence against pets can also be used to intimidate, threaten, or control victims,” the sheriff said.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office Domestic Violence and Animal Cruelty units are working jointly on the investigation.
