Your daily Minnesota news roundup starts … NOW.

The long-term fallout from Operation Metro Surge continues as St. Paul Public Schools considers midyear layoffs of teachers working with English learners — a cohort whose numbers have fallen in the wake of the government’s efforts to deport immigrants. Over 500 students did not return to school or did not enroll this fall, which could mean a budget shortfall of $4.9 million.

The Red Lake Nation’s child welfare program has been beset by controversy as several children have died in recent years while under their care. A vigil was held Monday evening north of Bemidji at the Red Lake Nation Boys and Girls Club for the children lost, marking the first public event to honor them since the federal government took over the program in September.

A Minneapolis police officer was fired by the department in April for alerting her brother that police were looking into a shooting he may have been involved in. Former Police Chief Brian O’Hara said Chanica Hall “showed neglect of duty, shared confidential records, failed to obey laws, lacked truthfulness, and interfered with a criminal investigation.”

Influencer Nick Shirley, the YouTuber whose unsubstantiated videos “exposing” fraud in Somali-run childcare set the stage for Operation Metro Surge, was given a check for $10,000 by Donald Trump. Still no word on the investigations into the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.

The race to replace Rep. Angie Craig in the Second Congressional District between the DFL’s Matt Little and Republican state Sen. Eric Pratt is shaping up to be a bellwether of how purple districts are moving this election season. Pratt is more moderate than many Republicans, and Little is more progressive than Craig.

The Main Cinema in Minneapolis got a little social media attention for a viral photo of their marquee where every film’s title was prefaced with “You Can See.”

And finally in your Minnesota news roundup: Marine on St. Croix may appear to be a charming small town but make no mistake: things got spicy in the second annual Straightest Stick Competition, hosted by siblings Setona (10) and Soren (8) Mahoney. The inaugural contest last year was not without controversy either.

“Last year a dog won,” Dan Mahoney, Setona’s and Soren’s dad, says.

The labrador won second place with a stick he carried in.

“It was very straight,” Setona confirms.

The siblings quickly dismissed a joker who submitted a stick of butter this year. Be serious, man.
